Having occasionally had this happen to me, I am going to lay out what I see
as the legal and ethical issues involved.
It does not matter what the reason is for making something public. The
author of an e-mail owns the copy right to his writings regardless of what
you think of them. If the note is private, one has the right to expect that
privacy.
Once in a while things are made public by accident but to do so on purpose
is shameful and a violation of trust. No one will trust someone who makes
private e-mails public on purpose.
