    Inge,

In addition to the commentaries that George Murphy suggested ( by Claus
Westermann, Gerhard von Rad) how about one written by a Jewish scholar? I
would suggest _Understanding Genesis_ by Nahum Sarna (New York: Schocken
    Books, 1966).

I would also suggest Gordon Wenham's _Word Biblical Commentary on Genesis
1-15 (Waco, Texas: Word Books, 1987) and Henri Blocher's _In the Beginning:
The Opening Chapters of Genesis_ (InterVarsity Press, 1984).
