Modern man did not domesticate Fido

There is a report by Robert Wayne in tomorrow's issue of Science which
indicates that the dog may have been first domesticated and thus split from
the wolf 135,000 years ago although the date has a wide range of error.
Should this work hold up, it would mean that someone other than anatomically
modern man made the first steps toward domestication of the dog.
