When I am back at my office, I might be able to identify some
additional sources, but I would recommend two books to you.

Science for the Citizen by Lancelot Hogben
Mathematics for the Millions by Lancelot Hogben

These are old books written by a mathematical geneticist. I do not
know much about his career except that he was at the University of
Wisconsin for at least one year around 1940. My father took a class
from him in Quantitative Genetics. I don't know if Science for the
Citizen is still in print. I have seen new paperback copies of the
math book in a couple of bookstores recently. They are both written in
lay language and outline the historical development of branches of
science and mathematics, respectively.

I have more books on this subject in my office.
