to the list

As I read the instructions for signup, a brief introductory note is in
order.

My name is David Buchanan. I am a Professor of Animal Science at
Oklahoma State University and have been on this faculty for 16 years.
My specialty area is Quantitative Genetics as applied to farm
livestock. My Ph.D. is from the University of Nebraska and my
undergraduate degree is from North Dakota State University. I have
been a Christian since my teenage years and am currently a member of a
Baptist Church here in Stillwater where, among other things, I teach a
Sunday School class for college students.

My interest in this list is to see some additional views about
evolution, cosmology and Christianity. My own view on age is
old-universe and my view of evolution is that it is a good model for
what has occurred among and within species over time. I also hold the
opinion that these views do not prevent me from proclaiming the Bible
to be truth, revealed by God through human authors.

I am not certain what I should say about my view on young earth
creationism. Since, as I have already stated, I feel the evidence for
an old universe is sufficient, I obviously reject some of the views of
young-earth creationism. Perhaps I should leave my views on this
subject to the following comment.

In a time when scientists at the frontiers of science are reaching
out for some understanding of God, I find it unfortunate when some
Christians say to them that a particular interpretation of Genesis
is all we need to know about how He brought the universe into being
and that the God that cosmologists attempt to describe cannot be
God as described in the Bible. For myself, I see much to suggest
that God that initiated the Big Bang is also God that lives in the
Word. In my view He is also God that Darwin attempted to describe
in the last sentence of "The Origin of Species".
