God continuously working

The issue of whether God is at work continuously or repeatedly lets nature
coast for a while, then intervenes sent me to the following passage in
John:

Because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews persecuted
Him. Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at His work to this very
day, and I, too, am working." John 5:16,17.

It would seem to me that the preferred model is God continuously at work
guiding and overseeing His creation, rather than the on again/off again
model that some creationist thinking seems to imply.
