A similar analogy might be the 3 minute hate sessions in
Orwell's "1984". The notion of holding up a picture of
"The Villain" was central to that book I think. Also, the
reaction to "big brother" sometimes strikes me as a similar
to the play between the atheists and the fundamentalists.

For Creationists, their Goldstein is Darwin, a balding man
in his 50s with a the long scraggly beard. They're taught
to hate that man, and every time the E-word is mention, that
balding man in his 50s always appears. It's a face to
be loathed.

It's strange how much energy is put into hating a
middle age Englishman of intellect. We hardly know of any
of pictures of the most cruel and inhuman people in the
world, yet a man who cared about his fellow man deeply,
is utterly loathed by some. Even if one cannot agree with
Charles Darwin, it seems like they could at least acknowledge
that he cared about the world we live in and the way people
are treated in this world. Instead, we make fools of ourselves
and our faith by hating the innocent and ignoring the crimes
of the guilty.

by Grace alone we proceed,
Wayne

By the way, does anyone know if Goldstein was actually
a picture of Jesus? It would make sense in the context of
the book (1984), but I might have read too much into his
text.
