In reformed circles much thinking has been done regarding Christianity and
Culture and one of the claims of reformational thinking is that it has a
much more integrative and broader view of all of life than some narrower
expressions of Christianity, especially that species of Christianity
characterized broadly as fundamenalistic. Now that many North American
Christians are awakening to a broader understanding of God's good creation
it is time to develop further the reformed insights together with all
interested Christians.
Take, for instance, the reformed dualism of common grace/special grace.
While it is perhaps an unfortuate dualism (given the general
anti-dualistic thinking of reformed peoples) it is, on the other hand, an
attempt to deal with the many good things non-christians accomplish in
life including cultural artifacts in the various arts like music and
artistic endeavour. This means that throughout human history there were
and are great works produced by those not expressly committed to the
trinitarian God who bring majestic volumes of praise to this same God in
their creativity.
Some of this reformed kind of thinking can be found in the recent work of
William D. Romanowski entitled EYES WIDE OPEN Looking for God in popular
culture, Brazos Press, a division of Baker Book House Co.
