The hand of an Australopithecine was found at Sterkfontein. The fossil
dates to 3.3 myr ago. The hand is remarkably human.

The report says:

``What is interesting about this hand is that although the skull is very
ape-like but with human-like teeth the hand bones are like those of a
modern man,'' Clarke said.

The fingers are short in contrast to the elongated digits of our closest
living relatives, the Great Apes, which include the chimpanzees and
gorillas of Africa and the orangutans of southeast Asia."
