Given a finite set of data points, two assumptions are needed before fitting
the data with a single curve. First we must assume that all the points are
somewhat related and then fit it with a particular, single curve. It is this
basic assumption that people are fighting about. [The points may not be
related, or else some are related and thus the need for more than a single
curve, and so on.] The curve that results is obvious once the assumptions
are agreed upon. It seems that there is no agreement which, to me, is quite
legitimate.
