I think Steve Gould dealt with Beringer in one of his columns in Natural
History during the past year sometime (I'm working from memory so I can't be
more specific). Probably the best book on the history of the interpretation
of fossils (including organic vs. inorganic qustions) is The Meaning of
Fossils by Martin J.S. Rudwick. He also has a brief mention of Beringer.
Rudwick was an internationally known paleontologist before turning full-time
to history. He is now one of the most respected historians of geology.
