Bill Hamilton recently asked about the historic roots of the
phrase God-of-the-gaps. It has been used in recent decades to describe
attempts in the past to get 'God' involved in particular events by
those attempting to relate science and Christianity as early as the early
19th C.

Charles Coulson discussed use of the phrase in his Science and
Christian Belief (I believe 1954). I suspect that he was not the
first to critique it.
