Notice the words: "reverse engineering" and "designed"

<<But Pinker argues that the mind cannot escape evolutionary
pressures. He says the mind can be revealed through the kind of
work he does, which he calls "reverse engineering" -- looking at
brain output, or behavior, rather than looking at the brain's
molecular and cell biology to figure out what the brain was
designed to do. Reverse engineering should help people understand
love, friendship, the drive for status, humor, common sense and a
host of other human traits, he said. >>

Of course they mean "designed by evolution" which means that evolution is an
engineer. :-)
