Dear ASA members:

Greetings! My name is Karin Turer, and I am the research assistant of
professor Randy Cornelius at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. We
are currently researching the attitudes of scientists who have strong
religious commitments.

We are in the second year of a project investigating scientists' perceptions
of the possible conflicts between religion and science. Last year, we took
a random sample of 500 physical and biological scientists from the membership
lists of various professional scientists' societies. This year, we would like
to take a smaller and more specialised sample of scientists who identify
themselves explicitly with some organised religion.

You, the members of the ASA, seem to be a self-selected group of the exact
type of people we are looking for, and we would be delighted if you chose to
take part in our research. As long as you are a practicing (or retired)
member of the scientifc community (preferably with a PhD), you are eligible
for our study.

To participate in our study, all you need to do is respond to my e-mail
address (Katurer@Vassar.edu) with your regular mailing address (snail-mail),
and you will receive our questionnaire within the next two weeks. If you
have any questions, feel free to contact me by e-mail or by phone (914-451-3242).

Your participation in our study would be exteremely valuable to us, and we
believe you would find it a thought-provoking experience. We thank you in
advance for your consideration, and we hope to hear from you shortly!

Sincerely,
Karin Turer
