I understand the point you're making here, but I think it needs nuance. In particular, it doesn't account for the fact that very small changes can happen (indeed, at the DNA level, must and do happen) very quickly.
So rather than speaking of "change over a 'long' period of time" one ought to speak of "accumulation of successive small changes over a 'long' period of time"?
