But I realize that your real question is in respects of Alexander's book, not Packer's view of evolution - on that score, I think Alexander is as good an introduction as anything going around.

I will say, though, that most of the works in the "evangelical Christianity and evolution" genre (authors such as Alexander, Collins, Falk, Berry, Wright, Colling, etc, etc) give equal treatment to theology, biblical exegesis, and science - so they're probably not the best sources for learning about evolution, per se. Really, it all depends precisely where your interests lie.
