This sort of statement bothers me because it fails to differentiate between
designism and design.
Designism may not be central to some religions (like secular humanism) but
it is is central to religions like Christianity, which claim a personal
God who designs.
It severely damages Christianity to strip it of it's designism.

On the other hand, designology (study of design) starts with nature. It is
not religious in origin, it is "not even" Christian in origin. its a secular
concept. It only tries measure design as opposed to all natural processes.
It doesn't get entangled with transcendental designers versus
non-transcendental designers. It does not get involved with final causes.
It is about proximate causes, not ultimate and final causes. This is why
methodological naturalism cannot possibly rule out designology.

Designism, starting with God, his personality and actions, deals in the
realm of the ultimate and imponderable, with final causes. It is not at
all the same thing as the study of design.

What the materialists have done is to conflate designism with designology.
