I know from previous posts of yours that I don't have to talk about the distinction between basing a position on specific verses as opposed to basing it on the overall message of Scripture. And it may help to point out that, in the end analysis, it really was the latter I was doing in this instance.
So, you're quite right that in Luke 15 the Shepherd is rejoicing not the sheep but there was no oversight of the point on my part: I was fully aware of it when I posted the Lukan passage.
All I can say is that my intent was to not to "proof text" the claim that repentance should be accompanied by joy on the part of the repentant sinner but rather to show something of the pervasive nature of the connection which scripture draws between the notions of repentance and joy.
To that end, I could ALSO have cited the passages relating to the marriage feast of the Lamb, the rejoicing of the redeemed in heaven, the connection between redemption and celebration which occurs throughout the Old Testament, etc, etc.
One REALLY interesting passage in this context is from Isaiah's wonderful portrayal of the suffering servant - "Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows;" (Isaiah 53:4) - and you have to ask: if our griefs and sorrows are borne by Christ, what business is it of ours to cling to them so tightly?
All I was attempting to show is that it is wrong headed to think the ONLY emotion to be associated with repentance is that of remorse.
Actually, it occurs to me that Luke 15 not only helps paint the broader picture of a connection between repentance and joy, but I think it not improper to suggest that if God and the angels rejoice at repentance of the sinner, then it shows, ipso facto, that the sinner is ALSO justified in rejoicing.
In that light, I think I'd personally want to strongly affirm the relevance of Luke 15 to the issue at hand.
