In terms of the fossil record, we do not know exactly what the first
animal was like; some of the oldest evidence of animals comes from
chemical traces of sponges rather than body fossils.
However, on both molecular and morphological evidence, we see that the
first animal was a sponge. The choanoflagellates are the closest
known non-animals; they can be colonial but do not have true
multicellularity nor a blastula larva.
