This is to highly recommend the film THE INVENTION OF LYING which was
just released. As well as being top notch science-fiction, it is
interesting theologically as well -- although the theological parts
are not accurate nor well developed. But as they are, they afford food
for discussion. Carol, who is my friend, my beloved wife and also a
PCUSA minister, saw it together Sunday afternoon; we had a lot of fun
discussing it.
It won't give away the plot to say the film posits a civilization much
like ours -- except that everybody tells the truth at all times. The
people there have, therefore, no fiction, no word for "truth," no
word meaning "untruth," etc. Everything is labeled with truthful names
-- the old folks home has an enormous sign saying "The place where sad
old people go to die." Coke is advertised as "flavored sugar water,"
and Pepsi as "Just as good as Coke." Then one day this dude discovers
he can tell someone something that is not so -- and the story unfolds.
See it.
