Mike is entirely correct in his assessment of this. I've been saying the same thing ever since Francis started talking about his faith. Francis isn't a deep thinker about theology and science -- very few really are -- but he's deeply committed, and the simple fact that he is a serious Christian and a serious scientist (neither of which anyone really doubts) is an offense to Dawkins and company.

It's vital to the ASA to understand this. Part of our importance as an organization -- part of our importance to the church (the body of Christ) and to the world -- is that we bear witness to the falsity of Dawkins's deepest convictions. If ASA could attract as members another 1000 Christians who are serious about their faith and their science, we'd be speaking far more loudly than we are. If this describes you, and you aren't an ASA member (yet), please very carefully consider joining with us. You don't need to agree with Francis' views on every issue, or with mine, or with those of any other individual member. All you need to do is to agree with our statement of faith (Apostles' & Nicene Creeds) and be a science person. That's it.

We need you.

Ted (ASA president)
