You catch on very fast.
But there are many complex factors swirling around and I just realized the
extent to which this played a role. It is by no means the sole factor and
may not be predominant.
I do think, however, that the claim that ID is not necessarily
anti-evolution is a curious irony. If straight-forward evolution were
considered to be true in its pure form, then it would not pass the
explanatory filter and the case for an intelligent designer would weaken or
even disappear. But the case could be made on different grounds and
therefore one can say the intelligent design hypothesis does not necessarily
oppose evolution. But if evolution were true and considered probable, there
wouldn't be a perceived need to find an alternative explanation. So "ID
community" and "evolution skeptics" are indeed very closely related.
