I don't know how to square what you say with the prayer that Jesus
taught his disciples:

"Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your
will be done,
    on earth as it is in heaven."

To me the above seem to be general requests that honor God.

"Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts,
   as we also have forgiven our debtors.
  And lead us not into temptation,
   but deliver us from evil."

And this later seems to be more personal requests. Thus I see that God
has invited us to make our requests known and that does not seem to me
to be treating God as a bellhop. Of course the Psalms are also
guidelines for prayer and they have a different point of view and
different emphasis and are more like "acknowledging that God is" and his
faithfulness and greatness.

As I see it our relationship to God is most like that between a
dependent small child and a loving caring parent and thus it is natural
for us to make requests that God in his wisdom may grant or deny.
