I'm not sure that "ideology" is the proper term. It is a
philosophical assumption. Any realm of human knowledge has a
philosophical foundation. I am becoming increasingly aware of how
important it is for those of us in the sciences to have some
grounding in the philosophical foundations of our discipline. For
many practicing scientists, and science teachers, the philosophical
basis of what they do and teach has never been consciously considered
-- and it is rarely taught in college science curricula. The same
goes for the history of science.
