In a famous letter that Descartes wrote Marin Mersenne in April 1630, he
suggested that "the mathematical truths which you call eternal have been
laid down by God and depend on Him entirely no less than the rest of his
creatures." Elsewhere on another occasion he argued that God could have
made a world in which 2 + 2 does not equal 4, and he probably had that in
mind when he wrote Mersenne. However, the date of the letter is 15 April,
hence we can't go any further with this.... :-)
