I must have misunderstood. I thought Preston wanted to start a new
organization garnering membership from other existing Christian groups,
however, the "in science" part would eliminate many of us. I agree with you
Randy, ASA already has a public persona, a mission, organization, long
history, and other intangibles that could be lost in a name change.

Sorry to throw cold water on a discussion thread, but the issue of a name
change for the ASA has been debated about every 10 years. It's been
interesting reading about some of these discussions. It has always come back
to keeping the name as it is. As far as I can tell, the selection was made
to emphasize the scientific commitment and the professionalism of the
society. The subtitle, "Fellowship of Christians in science" is what I
encourage people to use if they feel the mission needs to be more explicit.
You could argue that there's an element of "stealth" in it but I have found
that AAAS and other scientific organizations seem more willing to publicly
work with us without an "in your face" type of name.
Net: I can understand the argument for changing the name but I see no
compelling motivation or advantage to justifying investing the expense and
time of making such a change.
