Heya Mike,
The problem I have is that it's being suggested, as you said, that's there's
at least "some truth" to Dawkins' claims - but what's then suggested as
truth/pertinent has vanishingly little to do with what Dawkins himself said.
No, he wasn't basing his argument on the truth/falsity of God. No, he wasn't
talking about specific and narrow religion-related abuse, such as
snake-handling or suicide bombing. He wasn't even saying that there are
certain instances where a parent can use the idea of hell in a verbally
abusive way. He was making a broad, unsupported, and rather stupid claim
that evidence isn't just neutral on, but actually points against. Or put
another way, there's far less truth to what Dawkins claimed than there is to
the claim that Dawkins is tremendously and perhaps consciously inaccurate
and sloppy on this point.
As I said, I agree that questions of how Christianity is taught to anyone
are important, certainly where children are concerned. I could easily
imagine scenarios where an abusive parent could use thoughts of hell in
verbal/mental abuse - just as I can imagine an abusive parent using
atheistic thoughts in verbal/mental abuse. We don't have to pretend that
Dawkins' 'teaching children about hell or calling them christian is
abusive/evil' line is something other than it was to take these issues
seriously. If anything, it confuses the issue and harms it as a result.
As for why he's making the argument when the data reads against it - who
knows. Maybe the data doesn't matter here, because Dawkins is so offended by
religious thought that he considers it abuse regardless of the actual
effects on well-being or mental health. Or maybe it's little more than
socio-political maneuvering - associate religious upbringing with abuse
because such an association could further a goal of fighting religion, and
the actual truth of the claim simply doesn't matter compared to the goal.
I'd imagine people should consider what sort of tactics, word games, and
otherwise some use to advance social/political goals, what with there being
such a recent election.
