Hello, everyone,
I'm delighted to be back directing the Central PA Forum for Religion and
Science again this fall. In the next two weeks, details about our fall
events will go onto our webpage (www.messiah.edu/godandscience/), which I
have not updated since spring 2007.
The basic information you want for the moment is as follows. The first
public lecture (free) will be on Tuesday, 16 September, featuring biblical
scholar Dr. Peter Enns; the second lecture (fee) will be on Tuesday, 14
October, featuring physicist Stephen Barr. Both talks are at 7 pm in the
Hostetter Chapel Sanctuary. Details will be on the web site shortly.
Each year I invite people to help support our activities by becoming
members of the Forum. This is the only solicitation for support that you
will receive this year. Anyone who makes a tax-deductible gift to the Forum
(a donation to Messiah College designated for this purpose) of $35 or more
becomes a member through 30 June 2009. The primary benefit of membership is
knowing that you are helping to make possible our events, but members are
also sometimes given opportunities to meet with speakers or invitations to
smaller, private events.
The first private event is Thursday, Sept 11 (I apologize for this choice
of date, but I would rather not break our tradition of meeting on the second
Thursday of the month whenever possible). This is our annual kickoff
dinner. Anyone planning to make a membership contribution is invited to
attend. An informal buffet dinner will be provided, starting at 5:30 pm.
Feel free to arrive as late as 6:45; food will still be available and we'll
hold a seat for you. I will provide details about our plans for the coming
year, take comments and suggestions from everyone, and ask formally for your
approval and support. The dinner will be in Boyer 102, a nice conference
room just inside the front entrance to that building. If you want to become
a member but cannot attend the dinner, please let me know. If you are
planning to come to the dinner, please reserve a place--either by replying
to this message or by calling me at 717-766-2511, ext 6840, no later than
Monday, Sept 8. You may want to note this notification date on your
calendar.
I received several responses to my request (in June) for comments on
whether or not to have a reading group again this year. The alternative
suggestion was to have me do a short series of lectures on the history of
Christianity and science. Support was voiced for both options. For the
time being, I am leaning toward the reading group for October through
December, an off month in January (when I am teaching a course in New
Zealand), possibly a meeting with the author of the book in February, and
then lectures in March and April. I have not finalized this plan, but at
the kickoff dinner I will let you know. The web site will also provide this
information at that time.
As always, your support for our events--by attending, by bringing your
friends, and by a financial gift--is very much appreciated. Please consider
forwarding this to any friends who might want to be added to our email list.
Remember: our list is kept private and is used for no other purpose. I
always send you only a blind copy of a message. Addresses are added to the
list only by explicit request, and all requests to me removed are honored
promptly.
Sincerely,
Ted
