Re: [asa] POLL: How do you define "Science"?

Collin--

I sincerely apologize for giving offense. My intention was not to insult you. It was to criticize your poll, which is incomprehensible. This is one thing we do in science all the time -- in print, in person, everywhere. We criticize and critique. That was the purpose of my post, and no reflection on your person was intended.

I can't help you "phrase the question" because I don't know what the question is. Neither here nor in the poll are you at all clear on what you're trying to learn. When you flesh this out a bit, then I will be happy to engage you. In the meantime, I can't give a high enough recommendation to Del Ratzsch's book Science and Its Limits. Even if you weren't a Christian, I would urge you to read this book, to learn the basics of the philosophy of science; as a Christian you will appreciate it all the more.

P.S. This note was sent to Collin privately at about 2:15; it was meant for the whole list as well, so here it is.

That wasn't nice.
My goal is simply to understand the approaches being taken in the real world,
apart from what theorists might say is the "right" approach.

If you have a *better* way to phrase the question, I'm all for it. Teach me.
But please don't insult me.
