Secondhand smoke very slightly increases the risk of lung cancer.
However, it strongly increases the risk of heart disease. I had
wondered why a young-earth science textbook was in denial about the
effects of second-hand smoke, so it's helpful to see that it's part of
a package.

It is possible to produce oil rapidly if you have organic material
subject to relatively high temperature and pressure, e.g. in the Gulf
of California, where high rates of sedimentation provides pressure and
heat from the plate boundary cooks it. On the other hand, it can take
over 500 million years if temperature and pressure are consistently
low (parts of Australia). Fairly ordinary geologic conditions will
give you petroleum in about 70-90 million years, as in the Gulf of
Mexico, Arabia, etc.

If new oil was being produced at economically significant rates in the
earth, why is the U.S. no longer a net exporter? Why would we need to
open up new areas for drilling?
