Actually Dawkins doesn't have a good answer either. Why are all the tragedies
of the world to be chalked up as evidence against God, but none of the good
things (let alone the existence of life or anything at all) are allowed to be
enlisted as evidence for him? Dawkins is inconsistent.
If the fantasy good world of Dawkins was to exist, nothing bad could happen and
no death would be allowed to exist. Sound familiar? I actually think
Christians have the potentially more satisfactory "answer" whatever McGrath may
have done with it under the pressure of public debate. Skeptics may disdain the
idea of a suffering God, but that doesn't mean the idea is false.
My response back to Dawkins would include something like this: So then, is the
"happiness" of the whole world to be held hostage to the last vestige of evil or
suffering that exists anywhere? Is the artist of a magnificent work to be
denied all credit until everybody is willing to agree that they all like ALL
parts of his work? When Paul said to weep with those who are weeping and
rejoice with those rejoicing, I'm pretty sure that didn't mean all rejoicing
everywhere is to be shut down until all weeping is forever banished. Life just
doesn't work like that. Even Dawkins with his weak atheology should know
better. Death will always be with us. I reserve the right to praise God for
the blooming of a marigold anyway. My turn at mourning will come soon enough.
