Hi Christine,
Our Southern Baptist church allows women to serve as deacons (deaconesses?).
Though none have yet become one, they are welcomed. The deacon approval
committee will often have certain prominent women as the more active
members.
I don't know, however, if any Gen. 2 or 3 scripture is used. The NT seems
to have enough to justify the allowance of women (e.g. Romans 16). Phoebe
and Priscilla are examples. I think the Greek used to describe the service
of Phebe(KJV) is diakonos, which is translated "deaconess" in the RSV,
though most often translated "servant".
