Most of the big intro college biolgu text books have several chapters on it.
There really is NO defacto standard but ....
There are several books that are often recommened. One is
Futuyma, Douglas. 1983 SCIENCE ON TRIAL: THE CASE FOR EVOLUTION. This is now in the 1995 edition and a google check shows recent book by him entitled evolution that has great reviews.
Here at Dordt College, my colleague \who teaches a perspectives course uses Evolutionary analysis by freeman and Herron 4th ed. He finds it is quite readable by Freshmen.
In the plant area (my own area) I have found this book by one of the leading paleobotanists very good (Iinclude my annotation.
Niklas, K.J., 1997. The evolutionary Biology of Plants.* University of Chicago Press. 449p. This book will give you a good summary of current thinking on speciation, evolution and the fossil record. I also like the fact that the book presents some of the competing theories so you get a feel for both cladistic and non-cladistic approaches to taxonomy and speciation. Except for a couple of chapters on morphospace this a very readable book and will give you a good background to the field.

College level would be best, but I'd also be interested if there was a defacto standard for highschool also. Just curious what's out there. ...Bernie "It's turtles all the way down!"
