Art Benjamin is a professor at Harvey Mudd College.
Several years ago I was chair of a committee that brought Prof. Benjamin
to the University of Colorado to give his show, and I was responsible for
making the arrangements. The show was pretty much what you saw in this
clip, although I don't recall that he squared four and five digit numbers,
and so apparently he has added a few things since then. In the question
and answer period afterwards he was asked about what else he
could do and indicated that he had a method for getting fairly good
approximations for some logarithms.
We tried to invite him again five years later since the student body would
have been composed almost totally of people who had not seen him the
first time, but he said that in order not to have to spend so much time
away from his family, he would have to have at least a $1000 honorarium,
and so we decided that that was too much for our budget.
I have some misgivings about sending this response to the entire list
because the subject doesn't seem to be faith-related.
