I am uncomfortable with the fact that this letter refers to intelligent
design rather than Intelligent Design. This seems to make it appear that
the author is opposed to the idea that anything in nature is designed no
matter what the process was that brought it into being. This is one of the
concerns that many people have about how evolution is often taught. An
outright denial of ultimate design is philosophy and not science and thus
is no more appropriate for a science course than the opposite opinion
would be. I would note that philosophical opposition to the idea of
intelligent design (lower case) was a motivation for many to oppose the
Big Bang Theory, and these opponents turned out to be wrong.
