I don't think it's unethical - we are distant cousins of members of other species. (If someone leaves you a loophole, use it.)

& good 7th grade science projects start out with some openness to the possibility of unexpected results.

  Funny as that might be -- I cannot believe that the ultimate protocol they will use would include that possibility. Even 7th grade science projects are usually more carefully designed.

  It sounds a bit unethical, also. Even though they probably deserve it.
