In general, anything by Martin Rudwick should be required reading.

There is a nice essay by Lawrence Badash, "The Age-of-the-Earth Debate,"
Sci American (aug 1989): 90-96, and another by Henry Faul, "A History of
Geological Time," Amer Scientist (Mar-Apr 1978): 159-65.
