Two items of potential relevance:
In my interview for the position that Sternberg got at NIH (with
GenBank), the mention of ACG in my resume prompted advice against
proseletizing on the job.
Sternberg's area is crustaceans. Invertebrates generally haven't been
getting the best deal at the Smithsonian lately, at least in the
opinion of people dealing with mollusks, fossils, or cnidarians. (For
example, taking out the invertebrate exhibit to make room for big game
from a big donor; moving offices and collections around to space
perceived as less desirable.) Thus, some of the reported harassment
may be unrelated to the Meyer paper incident and not specifically
aimed at Sternberg.
