Re: [asa] Sternberg quote

Perhaps further clarification is in order:

As far as I can tell, Sternberg was subjected to unreasonable
discrimination after publishing Meyer's article, and many popular
criticisms were pure rumor. On the other hand, I don't think Meyer's
article should have been published, both as off-topic for the journal
and as being an inaccurate attack on evolution.

Sternberg had previously published some papers criticizing
conventional evolutionary ideas (e.g., Ann N Y Acad Sci. 2002
Dec;981:154-88.). However, no particular excitiement or criticism had
been generated by them.

He has served as an editor for the baraminology study group and
presented at their meetings, though rejecting young-earth views and
the extremely rapid evolution model that some of the baraminology
group has advocated. However, his membership in the International
Society for Complexity, Information, and Design would indicate an
inclination to ID. Of course, inclination to ID says nothing about
one's religious views; ID is too amorphous to pin down, but interest
in a designer would accord with the broad sense of creationism.

Creationist is a term that ought to be defined. I don't know what
Sternberg's views are, but they don't seem to quite match with
standard structuralist approaches. It sounds as though he's into
stirring things up and being unconventional; perhaps the ID mess he
got into was such an attempt that went too far.

(Repeat of disclaimer-I applied for the job at GenBank that he got.
However, as I couldn't start for several months, I never gave it much
thought and took a while to recognize that it happened to be the same
person. )
