[asa] annoying format

OK, after trying various jerry-built devices to deal with it, I'm finally going to ask about a relatively new email format - that in which a vertical line is placed to the left of the message to which one is replying, & then 2 such lines next to the message to which that is a reply &c. That is no worse, & in some ways more elegant, than the older way with >, >> &c at the beginning of each horizontal line of previous messages. But it's annoying to me simply because I don't see how to do this. If I try to start a reply at the bottom of such a post, I don't know how to get out of the area defined by the immediately previous vertical line so there's no distinction between my reply & what I'm replying to unless I use different colors, which eventually gets silly in a long correspondence. The alternative is to put the reply before the thing to be replied to, which a lot of people do but which is completely backwards & is especially clumsy when one wants to reply point by point to a previous message.

So how do you do it? I have Outlook Express with various strange & wonderful style options but don't see how this works.

Shalom
George
