Bill Dever was my brother's PhD director at U of Arizona. He's known as a
moderate in this particular field (palestinian archeology), b/c on the one
hand he rejects using the Bible to guide his digs (ie, he rejects the
"biblical archeology" that is often trumpeted in Christian and Jewish
circles), while on the other hand he rejects the politically-motivated
(think about modern Near East politics and you can fill in the blanks)
"non-historicist" approach to the Bible, according to which the OT is just a
bunch of literary stories with no historical content whatsoever, such that
David and Solomon were inventions of later writers.
That obviously doesn't make Dever always right, but I always pay attention
to what he says.
