Or how it was when the James Ossuary was presented. Same science by press
conference. Same breathless TV shows. Who could forget the hyperventilating
by BAR? The same bogus statistical claims. But, the Christian community
tolerated the bad science because the conclusions were consonant with what
we wanted. Some of us have learned our lesson, but there is no way that
criticism of this will not come off as self-serving. This is particularly
the case given that some evangelical Christians more readily accept science
from infotainers in the media, such as Rush Limbaugh, Michael Crichton, and
Rich Lowry, rather than scientists. To be sure, non-Christians also pick
up science from popular culture as the 2007 Academy Award for documentaries
attests to. But, their ox is not being gored here. (No pun intended.) This
is all too bad because the archeologists are on our side on this one. The
lesson to be learned: be very, very careful in picking your friends.
