My Anabaptist friends (lots of them here) would draw a pretty sharp
distinction between the church and the state, and what is appropriate and
even ordained of God for them to do. As George probably knows, in the early
16th century they even picked up on some of Luther's comments about the
sword having been ordained for the state, and they developed a "two
kingdoms" theology that is still quite influential today.
I don't agree with George that "if such a view is to hold in the church, it
holds a fortiori in the state." I am probably a little closer to George
than to my pacifist Anabaptists friends on some issues, but as a Christian
from a reformed tradition (reminding himself that Calvin wanted a church
state in Geneva, while Luther wanted a state church in Germany), now with
many Anabaptist friends, I've seen enough to disagree with George on the
basic premise.
