Even today, writers appeal to fiction that is commonly known for examples. For
example the tale of George Washington admitting to chopping down the cherry
tree might be referred to in an observation about honesty. Even though it's
known that the story is a fabrication, it still tells a truth: that Washington
had a reputation for honesty.
