I think Janice has it right. A good many Christians might gladly step off the
creationist bandwagon if scientists would admit the possibility that the
seeming randomness of evolution can admit design. Randomness is a slippery
concept when trying to fathom the operations of an intelligent being. For
example, I've been married for nearly 34 years, and over time I've gotten
accustomed to my wife's reactions to things so I can often predict them. But
to predict everything? No way. My mental model of my wife must (if I am to
retain my sanity and my good relationship with my wife) must include an element
of randomness. From her POV, however, her reactions are not random. Now
consider trying to model how God supervises nature. I would submit a much
greater element of randomness must go into that model.
