Why are American cars still bigger than European ones? Is it because

I cannot see why any family needs a car bigger than 1.8 litres,

a sedan or people carrier.=20

For real absurdity in the Black Hills I saw a couple sitting in a car =
with the engine on and clearly the air conditioning on! It was lovely =
outside and not too hot to walk up a mountain with a 1500ft climb in =
the heat of the day.
