I don't know what has been fully substantiated, but on the one hand
the publication of the paper was clearly questionable and merited
censure; on the other hand, some of the reported responses (grilling
on political/religious views) were also unjustified and probably
illegal.

(I should perhaps mention that Sternberg got a job with GenBank that a
friend and I both interviewed for, whereas neither of us is doing well
for scientific employment [or other employment for me; haven't heard
from Jay since hearing he was going into another field]. However, I
had forgotten his name, and the job wasn't the greatest match, so I
don't think I'm biased. Jay had been job hunting longer than I, and
we had both recently interviewed for another position and lost out to
some other crustacean worker, so I think he was probably more annoyed
than I.)

It might also be of interest that Jay spotted Sternberg's signature on
the Discovery Institute petition and was suspicious of him on that
account. I was searching online for more information about the
incident and found that Sternberg had participated in a baraminology
conference some years earlier. However, no one at the Smithsonian or
NCBI got upset until the publication of the article. In general, this
casts doubt on the picture of evolutionists as vigilantly attacking
any dissent for fear of exposing all their flaws.
