Janice's post places my critical comments about Jack Haught's personal
beliefs about Catholic doctrines adjacent to a quotation from a AAAS news
release, specifically this one:
Quote from the news release: "...An array of distinguished
reviewers, contacted by AAAS, found the book to be a useful, balanced
treatment of the issues. .....Jack Haught, a Georgetown University
theologian ...."
I want to distance myself from the implication she wants you to draw,
namely that Jack's endorsement of a book should be disregarded, simply b/c
he is committed to a Teilhardian understanding of the history of creation.
My major reservations about his theology notwithstanding, Jack is one of the
very finest scholars of religion and science in the world. I have in my own
courses here sometimes used his book, "Science and Religion: From Conflict
to Conversation," which really is an insightful, very helpful overview of
some very big religious questions related to science, such as, "Was the
Universe Created?" and "Does the Universe Have a Purpose?" I also invited
him to come speak to my students several years ago, and I've often talked
with him at professional meetings. I wish his theological commitments were
different, but his scholarly standards and judgments are superb. I'd love
to have my work someday be considered half as good as his.
