Moorad makes an excellent point. Furthermore, the Turks today still deny
that they committed genocide against the Armenians. When my wife and I were
in Istanbul a week ago, the topic came up with a desk clerk at our hotel. He
said that there was no genocide. "It was a civil war," he said, "like
between the Indians and the whites in your country." The irony of his
analogy was not lost on Maria and me, but we said nothing. Later we
purchased some goods from a shop owned by an Armenian, who had settled in
Istanbul from eastern Turkey, the Armenian heartland. When Maria asked him
about his people's sad history, he replied, "We don't talk about it."

We learned that there are two things you don't do in Turkey: criticize
Ataturk, the founder of the Republic, or talk about the Armenian genocide.
