Yes, I think the claim that the bar codes are the mark of the beast is quite
a common one in fundamentalist Christian circles.

Another even more bizarre one was expressed to me by a computer science
student from Calgary university. I had wandered into the nearest church to
where I was staying on a two week business trip. It turned out to be a
fundamentalist Pentecostalist church. This guy tried to tell me that the
Internet bears the mark of the Beast, because of the "www" prefix, and that
"wav" is the sixth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, and hence it spelt 666. I
was too polite to ask if he was aware that the NT was written in Greek, not
Hebrew.
